New HDD not located on boot up 2

I am attempting to install new 20 gb HDD on an old P5-60 Gateway PC. Win98 installed on HDD. Unable to find any IDE drives on boot up and hangs ...
AMIBIOS with update (1.00.10.AF2T 1998).
System will boot OK with old 1.2gb HDD (WIN98).
I seem to remember from the dim and distant past that this is just a case of MB not recognising newer larger drives over 2.1gb and if so is there anything I can do about it.
I have searched for BIOS/MB Driver upgrades but to no avail.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

First off make sure you have the jumper set correctly on the new drive. Are you setting it to be the slave of your current boot drive or the master drive on the secondary IDE channel. If you have already checked this then you very well may have the 2.1GB drive limit problem you mentioned. You could buy a IDE controller for $30-50, the new drive should have no problems on a modern controller "Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people."

There are various limits on what mobos can see - but normally they just see drive as big as their limit if its bigger - so this sounds like something else wrong (also, with bios dated 98, it should be able to see at least 8GB and almost certainly more). I'd check jumpers (as suggested) & connections. Could also try manually entering drive CHS details in bios just to see if it can be recognised).

Thank you gentlemen,
I have now solved the problem.
I went to Western Digitals website and found the manual settings for the HDD. I then input these into the BIOS and hey presto it recognised the drive.
I am now up and running. Thankyou both for your time and assistance.

Many Thanks and Best Regards
