Hi,

I have a problem - I just bought a HDD case, inserted my HDD and connected to the PC. The PC recognizes it as a GENERIC USB DISK USB DEVICE (note, with out a letter), but the icon of the "removable disk" does not appear in my computer. I checked it out in computer management, and it only appears in Storage -> Removable Storage-> Media, and i think it should also appear in disk management, but it doesn't. I connected my mp3 player and everything works fine, it recognizes as a removable disk and assigns letter to it.

Please help.
Many Thanks

If the HDD is IDE, try placing its jumper in the Master position. Also ensure the drive is actually spinning up.

It seems to be in the masters position..

many thanks

Is that a new HD or is it the C: drive from your PC that you put in the External case?

If it's new you have to Partion it firat and format before it get a letter.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

It may well be shown in My Computer as a regular drive, rather than a removable one. be sure to always "safely remove hardware" before disconnecting it, or powering it down.

Whether or not it gets a drive letter so it can appear in My Computer depends on how or if its formatted as already mentioned. Use disk management to see what the issues - if any - are.

I just bought a HDD case"
Did it come with drivers?
Also, does the "initialize new disk" wizard even pop up? I'd scan for hardware changes in Computer Manglement...uh, Management...lol

yes it did actually come with drivers, the manual said it didn't need any for 2000/Xp. I tried to install all of them anywayz, but it still doesn't work. I tried scaning in the Computer management, but with no luck.

many thanks.

Operating systems since ME do not require drivers for external drives of any kind.

What brand is the drive? Is the drive IDE? Maybe other brands but Western Digital for sure, signal drives do not require a jumper at all. Your drive will fall under that category.

Test the drive in a computer using the IDE Header on the motherboard and see if it recognizes it tat way. If it sees it zero fill the drive to erase every thing on it, then put it back in the USB case. Try a different USB port and even a different PC.

If it still will not function properly you may have a bad usb device
