I apologize I am sure this is a stupid question.

I put in a new hard drive the other day but I did not disconnect my cable modem from my computer. I left it there overnight and the next morning I loaded Windows back on. I have had problems with viruses and I always get notifications from my firewall on attempts to access my computer.

My question is it possible for someone to have accessed my hard drive and put a virus on through the cable modem even if no software was installed on my hard drive? Wouldn't my network card at least have to be installed for this to happen?

thanks

With nothing on the HDD, I would say impossible.
However, if you are using XP, you might have become victim within minutes of installing the system and connecting to the internet. You must enable the firewall before connecting, and I would suggest running the 3 fixes on offer for free at
Regards, Andy.
