using a new 80g hard drive. found that I could only get the drive located using 3&4 and 5&6 jumpers. used the tool disk that came with the hd to make a "bootable floppy". Used this disk to load whatever on the drive and then it promted me to load the operating system cd (w2000 pro). I did this and it loaded and said it needed to format the Hd, the disk that came with the Hd was supposed to have done that, but I said ok and formated again. everything seemed to load ok, and said it was going to restart. system restarted, but comes up DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. Ive put the os disk back in, but it wants to start the load process all over again. Ive tried to use a w98 start up disk and do a sys c:/s to see if that would work, but doesnt. Im not a computer geek, please tell me how I can get that system to boot.

You don't need the tool disk that came with drive. I'm not entirely sure what's happened from your description, but to install 2k you just need to boot from the 2k install CD (so CD should be first boot device in bios settings). This will bring you to a choose/create partition to install into screen. Use the tools there to remove any partitions you've set up & then create & format a new partition for 2k to install into. follow instructions, answer questions as & when and in probably 30 minutes you'll be up and runing with 2k.

PS. This site is supposed to be for computer professionals - so as a non computer geek, not sure you qualify! (there are other forums on the net which are not just for professionals if you have further problems - just Google for them).

Oops, i didnt realize that this site was for pro's only...i kinda got the feeling but noticed questions similar to mine...srry about that tek-tips.com. I'll find a new forum although, most likely, it wont be near as good as this one. take care!

I have ran into this problem many times. First make sure you have only one hdd on the IDE controoler. Put the CD-ROM or CD-r+w on the second controller. Try again. My bet will be you still have the same problem after doing a re install of the OS. Visit the manufacturer's of the HDD internet site and get two utilities one will be the format utility and the other a diagnostic utility. First try the format utility and reinstall the OS. If that doesn't work then try the diagnostic utility.( both are bootable from the CD-ROM.) I have tried this and it has fixed some drives, however other drive come back with no problems showing from the diagnostic program but still don't work. In this case send the drive back and get a new one. Best of luck. Respectfully GBW

I don't want to start a flame, but just curious: wolluf, were you born as an "expert", or did you have to learn like the rest of us? The person is not a "computer professional", yet, you never know - he may turn out even better than some of us.

Micker - no, and I'm still obviously learning. I was just reflecting the logo at the top

and the fact that the management of this site takes that statement seriously. Which means this post/thread may be red flagged & removed.

Perhaps I didn't express myself very well - personally I'm quite happy to provide as much help as I can to any reasonably asked question.
