I notice the name of this forum changed from "General Telephone" to "General Converged Phone Network".

Hmm, personally I would say these are different topics. For example under the old forum questions about brand X PBX were appropriate if there was no forum for brand X. Also discussion of things like T1 signaling and POTS ring voltages. Not sure these things fit under the "converged phone network" title.

Much of the stuff I would expect under the "converged phone network" title would belong under the VOIP forum.

I guess existing users of this forum will continue to use it the way it has been used in the past, but I wonder if we'll continue to attract new memebers from the Teklephone world or if we'll attract a lot of IP/VOIP people but not people who know real telephony.

Of course there is plenty of overlap anyway.

So what's in a name?

I wonder why ?

"general telephone "seemed to fit ,a place to ask telephone questions where no other forum covred it

what the hell does "general converged phone network " mean ?

why wasn't I consulted on this change first ? [wink]

The category one level up is now Converged Phone Networks, as well. That's not what it used to be, is it?

That exactly my thought when I notived it too.

My guess is that since Tek Tips is, as a whole, computer-centric that some non-phone person though5t the phone phone closet area was out of place and decided to fix this.

To the extent that it weekens the acquisition of new tipsters it could be detrimental. If so I'l be less likely to contribute to Tek Tips (I have nto done so in the past, but I have certainly considered doing so. I guess we'll see).

jneiberger - good observation. I *think* that changed ion the past 24 hours.

I really don't see where "converged platforms" don't fit under the VOIP banner.

The management at Tek-Tips has heard our pleas, and the orginal name has been restored.

but, but ..... I liked the new one better :)

Ya!!! it is changed back. So there IS a Santa Claus!!!
It seems that they is a world wide conspiracy to change the name of everything to 'corfuse' all of us turnips that just fell off the truck. I have tried to climb back on the truck, but they changed the name of it to 'lorry', and I can't speak White Cliffs of Dover English.
I wish they called all the Avaya PBXs 'Definity' like the good old days. Now everytime Avaya changes a line of code Avaya invents a new name that is more 'converged network' pretty.

Avaya ?

you mean lucent dont you

no wait AT&T ;-)

My grandmother's MultiVantage cigarettes are what finally killed her. Avaya changed the name to Communication Manager shortly after I wrote them a letter.

I am still trying to understand what Avaya does <haha>. Supposedly they the "enterprise products" division of what was Lucent.

So how does that work? A 2500 set could be used in an enterprise, or a home. SO is that an enterprise solution?

What about a key system?

Small office home office, is that an "enterprise".

Ah well, as I started this thread, whats in a name.
