I am familiar with VMware server, but I have not used ESXi before. We are implementing a new IBM blade server that has ESXi running. Hardware is configured, storage pools & volumes are configured and accessible via the VMware Infrastructure Client and I'm ready to build my first VM. My blades have an internal 146GB hard drive, along with a 1.5TB array. My plan is to use the 146GB drive for ISO storage, and my VMs on the array.

On my linux VM host, I would just SSH in and transfer the ISOs so I could load from them. I have tried to FTP and to SSH to my ESXi host, but it does not respond. Is there a way to get the ISOs loaded so I can just map to them like I do with VMware Server?

Thanks!

Saw another post about deleting an old VM and that clued me in to browse my datastore and viola, there was an upload button.

Please disregard my question.

ESXi does not include SSH or FTP nor does it include a web interface. You would need the Enterprise version of ESX for those things. But yes browsing your data store would get you to upload the ISO files. Also, I'd ditch the 146 gig drive and put in a 36 gig one, that is a complete waste of space and you could use 146 gig for something else. The install of ESXi is less than one gig. Hence the lack of SSH, FTP and web services.

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

According to the ESXi install is less than 32MB. On our IBM BladeServers, the ESXi is installed on a 4GB embedded flash device. The 146GB drive was ordered specifically to put ISO's on, IMHO anything less "is a complete waste".

ESXI does allow for SSH. You just have to configure it.
Alt-F1 will get you to the interface.
type unsupported at the password prompt.
edit the /etc/inetd.conf to enable ssh.
