Should you get a busy signal or ring-no-answer when calling a DID number on a new T1 that isn't connected to anything? We have a brand new T1 with 100 DID numbers that ring busy, but when it was first delivered I remember calling them and getting ring-no-answer. I'm trying to determine if the carrier may have changed our circuit somehow since the equipment attached to it is no longer working. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

glarkin...your t1 carrier may have turned the t1 down because it does not see equipment.

Thanks...I'm about to open a ticket with them to investigate. We had a fax server on that T1 for a week and all was working fine, but when we went to test it again on Friday night the DIDs now ring busy. The carrier tested the circuit and said everything was fine but the busy condition wasn't there before. Thanks again for the input,

Greg

If your DS1 goes down the CO switch will take the trunks out-of-service. That is a normal process for this type of service, since the DS1 comes right out of the switch typically. But in some cases even if the DS1 is restored the trunks may have to be manually released back into service.

Hope this helps!

I agree with all of the above. If you have nothing connected they go into alarm and they can't leave them in alarm indiefinitely.

Don't even bother opening a ticket till you have the CPE connected.

If this is served by a HDSL or HDSL2 smart jack you can pretty well determine the health of the DS1 by looking at the alarm lights.

best of luck.

put a loop back in the jack. the co does not monitor voice t1's for alarms, you can pay for that service but it would be unusual. because the ckt is down, your getting all trunks busy. with a loop back, pins 1 and 2 to pins 4 and 5, the ckt will go idle at the central office and you will get ring no answer. we route vacant did's to a ran, vacant number intercept (vnr) or with rdr data..

Hi Greg,

If the CO sees a hard loop, the carrier and ports will return to service assuming they were left in an "Auto Out" condition for the duration of the time when the CO switch saw the carrier down).

With T1E&M signaling, someone trying to call a DID might also get a reorder or an "All Circuits Are Busy" recording (depending on what message is sent back to the originating CO switch via SS7 links), because the CO switch grabs one of the channels on the T1, goes offhook, does not see a proper wink acknowledgement, decides that a good trunk is not available and simply times the call out.

I've also seen some instances where the CO switch will try to terminate a call on different channels before giving up and timing a call out.

with a did on loop, you will not get a ring back, the co is sending 3 or 4 digits per your request.. even with the t up, the 4 digits will be sent back out, central office does not see that as a complete msg

In the end the problem was with the server's fax board and not the T1. The carrier had tested the circuit clean to the CSU several times but our server guys kept insisting the problem was not with their equipment. They were strangely quiet once they finally replaced the board and got it configured correctly (which took them MANY attempts to get right). Anyway, thanks again for the replies.

what a surprise, usually they deny changing anything!!!

because it is a t1 and not a pri, you can test your equiptment with a loop back. did that a lot in the old t1 days, with a loop toward your equiptment, direct seclect a channel, send 4 digits, that will emulate an outbound and a inbound call
