Okay, newbie to SQL here so have pity!

I want to install a program and it asks for an SQL Server. Now we have SQL running on one server but this is a central MIS and so no way do we mess with this. Do I need to install SQL on another server (which seems stupid to me) or do I create a new database inside the existing SQL Server (which is implied in the instructions but then seem to also imply that we should have a freshly installed SQL Server).

Any ideas?

If it is just looking for a particular database to create, then if allowed, create the DB on your central MIS SQL Server.

If it is looking for a new instance of SQL Server you could, once again if permitted, install SQL Server on your MIS Server. It will then let you create what is called a Named Instance of SQL Server and will not effect the base installation of your default SQL Server instance.

Of course there are always the issues of having w instance of SQL Server on the same server competing for resources.

Thanks

Are you doing it just for testing purposes? if so i would use a seperate machine. You should have a test machine for sqlserver. i have had "production finished" programs blow up servers, as in time to reformat the array

assuming you have tested it and its for production, follow jays instructions.

if you are not sure, have who ever takes care of the cetnral mis sql server help you out. people usually dont get mad if you ask for help. they will get mad if you mess up thier server.
