I've recently heard a buzz about a new data modeling technique, and am looking for some honest unbiased feedback before I engage in this effort.

They called this thing a "Data Vault". Anyone heard about it? Apparently it's discussed somewhere on web site. They say it's a mix between 3rd normal form and star schema, and that it offers me a best of breed solution for enterprise data warehousing.

Call me a skeptic, but I want more information. Anyone got an opinion?

Thanks,

I have to agree with you. I keep hearing of the 'new patented cure-all methodology (TM)' from different companies, but I've never seen anything to change my world.

The brief descripiton of their web seminar states that their methodology stores vast amounts of data in a granular format. That and their sketch of the seven data areas in their 'Matrix methodology' (which shows the data vault separated from data marts and BI tools) make me suspect that it's a variation on Inmon's data warehouse design.

Every architect that I've met always thinks that their way of modeling is the best. (No, I'm not an exception to the rule). I guess that this is the same factor, combined with marketing.

I've read the post too, I recently found something on their site about the data vault, it was a series (apparently not finished yet) - it started in their December Newsletter?? It's a good read...

I'd be curious if you had an opinion on their data modeling techniques...

I too have read about this "data vault" method of datamodelling quite sometime. I have not used or come across this type of design which they say is ultimate. But what can i put is that it is bit similar to a Hub type architecture which is infact discussed in Bill Inmons earlier books. I think with that type of design lot of care has to be give on the physical world of design definitely.
