Hello,

I have created a new custom search engine that focuses on data mining. You can access it here:

Feel free to add any site, topic, blog or news that is related to data mining (you can of course add yours, if you have any). The more people contribute, the better the search engine will be.

Hi Sandro,

I am a fan of your blog and custom google search. I am in the process of deciding on a topic for my researc MSc. I like the idea of Data Mining and have scanned a couple of books and viewed a few relative sites.

My primary degree is in Software Development so I have an excellent understanding of programming languages etc.

The only thing that's putting me off the whole data mining area is that there seems to be a lot of "Statistics" and "Mathematical Modelling" involved. I realise this is important and you will probably say "what do you expect?", but I am still unsure about the whole area (being a novice).

If I feel not so confident about my ability to get deep into maths and statistics etc, do you think I should avoid data mining as a topic?

Please be honest with me as it could save me a lot of grief in the future.

Thanks.

GF

Hello,

In my opinion, you don't need to be a math guru to do data mining. I'm not an expert in maths, but of course, you need some basics and some algorithmics knowledge. As you are in software development, I think it should be allright.

The field of machine learning is much more math oriented. However, the data mining field is more computer science oriented. Of course, in both field, you need to know some statistics.

So, to be honest, if you like data mining, you should not avoid it! :)

Hope it helps!

Thanks Sandro,

Think I'll get "Statistics for Dummies" out of the library!
