My company purhcased and set up CM 4.0. The system has been in place for a couple years. We use it on a private network, just for offices to talk to each other. Right now the numbering structure are just 3 digit numbers. We are looking to add the ability to plug into the pstn in the future. What i would like to do is get prepared for that move. I would like to set up a numbering structure for the phones. 7 digits, the catch is, i would like the customers on the private network to dial just 4 digits to reach the desired number, is this possiable or am i way off. Thanks for everything.

I can't for the likes of me figure out why in heaven you would want 7-digit Directory Numbers. You don't need this in order for DID to work, if that is your goal. Generally speaking, you usually route with just the last 4 or 5 digits of the number anyway and even that doesn't have to match your directory numbers, as you can always create translation patterns.

Please elaborate.

We have are own telephone service. I can't really go into details, but the idea is to eventually tie into the telephone network. We also support voip phones all over the place, and we will use the prefix as a locator.

PS. I'm not IS/IT Management, i selected the wrong one.

It's probably going to take some creativity with translation and route patterns (more specifically, the appending of prefix numbers) to do what you want, but it certainly sounds feasible. Just take your time on the dial plan.
