Hi everyone... I am a first time user and have a few questions. I have a computer (Intel PIII 500 w/128 megs of ram) and recently my original 45x cd-rom drive stopped working... It was just a cheap genetic drive so I replaced it with a Samsung 40x but thats where the trouble starts... When I plug in the CD-ROM the whole computer just freezes... Stops responding... I unplugged the drive, got into windows, installed the drivers and then tryed again... no luck, the computer still freezes everytime i hook it up. I have tryed everything... no luck. So Basically, I have a new CD-ROM drive... the drivers... i can get into windows no problem, its just like normal only no cd-rom capabilities and everytime i hook the new drive up the computer instantly freezes... Please help.. I really appreciate it. Thanks very much!

Check your jumper settings on the back of the new CD Rom.
If the old one was set to slave make sure the new one has the same setting.
Also make sure that your cable is conneted correctly. Hope this Helps

Did you uninstall and delete the drivers for the old CD-ROM before installing the new ones? Check out AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS etc., for remanents of the old drivers.

You might want to try putting the CDROM on the secondary IDE Cable, if you have one. I just bought a new CDRW drive, before I installed it I did some digging and saw someware that it could cause a conflict if it was on the same cable as the HDD. Most likly, it is what maruis said. Check Jumpers, install CDROM, Power up PC. What is your OS??

Ideally this new drive wants to have it's own IDE ribbon cable and working off the IDE2 plug on your motherboard, manufactures tend to use one cable for cheapness but a CDrom working on the hard drive ribbon can slow the hard drive down considerably.
I am presuming you have only one rom drive in your system?
Then you would set the jumper on the back of the drive to master.
If you just want to swop like for like then yes, just check whether the old drive was set to master or slave and swop the jumper on the rear accordingly. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

secret agent I guess the most likely fault with your original drive, is smoking fug/cat hairs etc on the lens.clean with a dab of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud. this fixes 95% of drives. Further, the non working "new" drive, is 95% certain the cable is the wrong way up,or a bent pin/or less likely offset 1 pin ...been there so many times zzzzz .rgds Paul
