I am having an ongoing problem with my CD/DVD burner. when i put a new CD or DVD in the drive to either burn or play a game from it, or even music, the drive doesnt recognise the disk swap for at least 5 mins. Clicking on the drive's icon through explorer causes the entire system to lock up. I have done the following things to try and trace what the problem is.
Reloaded operating system..
replaced CD/DVD drive
Replaced Motherboard with different model.
my system is as follows
ASUS P4S800D-X
Pentium 4 2Ghz
1 GB Excellsor DDR ram (2x512 non-ECC)
1 Sapphire Radeon 9000 Vid card
Main drive Maxtor 6Y080P0 80 GB
1st slave Maxtor 4W100H6 100 GB
2nd Slave Seagate ST330063 300 GB Sata
3rd Slave Seagate ST350064 500 GB Sata
CD/DVD Burner Plextor 716A (rev 1.06)
Windows XP Pro (Legal License)

Any Ideas as to what is causing the problem and how can I fix it? I have also tried a different CD/DVD burner (Sony DRU 500AX)

I'm not following your setup configuration.

So you have two maxtor hard drives on the same IDE channel, the primary? You said 2nd and 3rd slave for the SATA drives, but SATA doesn't use the master/slave setting.

At this point, I'm assuming your Plextor drive is the master on the Secondary IDE channel, all by itself. If that's correct, then make sure it's connected to the "end" of the cable and not at the "middle". Also, try using a different IDE cable if you haven't tried that already. Most burners should work fine with an 80-pin cable, though there are some out there that work better with 40-pin.

If that doesn't help, the next thing I would do is detach the 3 hard drives that you don't need just temporarily as a test. Sometimes an underpowered power supply can cause this.

sorry for being unclear with my configuration setup cdogg. the drives are as follows.
C drive 80 GB Maxtor
D drive 100 GB Maxtor
the Sata drives are set up using the Sata channel on the motherboard.
the motherboard I currently have allows me to utilize the Sata channels as either a raid configuration OR as more drives.

The Plextor is set as the master on the IDE chain.

the power supply I am using is a 500 Watt Ultra X power supply.

I have tried accessing the CD/DVD drive with ONLY the C drive in the system & the burner with the same negative results. I am completely stymied as to what to try next, short of tossing all of it and building from scratch again.

OK, but I'm still not clear as to what's on each IDE channel.

Primary Master - 80GB Maxtor
Primary Slave - 100GB Maxtor

Secondary Master - Plextor
Secondary Slave - empty

Is that right?

Also, don't forget to make sure that the Plextor is attached to the far end of the IDE channel, not the "middle" connector. Also check in the BIOS to make sure the secondary IDE channel isn't disabled.

Try the Plextor in another PC to make sure it's not the drive. I'm guessing it's not, since you said another CD-ROM didn't work either. Not sure what else it can be since you've replaced the mobo and drive. Don't forget to change out the cable either (following my suggestion from the last post).
