Cisco have once a again released new CCNP exams and you have to register prior to Sept 7th 2003. You may not take the exam any more than 45 days after regestering. This is really annoying as I have been waiting for the Sybex study guides to come out for the 640-901, 640-604, 640-605, 640-606 and have been studying. There is now no chance of me passing these before mid October :-( CCNA runs out in Jan 2004 as well. For those that are interested.........

Crypto,

Why have you been WAITING for new study material, i've been using the CCNP Preparation Library (4 Book Set) by Cisco Press since Spring of 2002 (I have my CCNP/DP). The only thing you will probably NEED to do is download the IS-IS supplement for the 640-90x or 642-8xx routing exam. If you wait until August, the new prep library set will have all the latest material.

If you can pass any of the 642-8xx CCNP exams, it will automatically renew your CCNA for 3 more years (change in cisco policy).

Crypto, do you have a link on that new Cisco policy about updating your CCNA??

@Dogbert2 - Are you certain that I only need to pass ONE of the new CCNP exams to renew my CCNA and then I can do the rest at my leisure? Does this apply with the old CCNP exams?

As far as I was aware the Sybex CCNP box set was only released in Feb 2003. I could be wrong though.

The following info was taken from the URL below.

"Recertification Requirements
Renewal requires certification holders to register for — and pass — the appropriate Cisco recertification exams.
CCNA and CCDA recertification takes place when a candidate passes the current certification exam or any new exam, bearing the prefix 642, at the Professional or Cisco Qualified Specialist level. " - What are the 642 exams? Does this apply to 643?

642-8xx series exams are CCNP Level Examinations (there will be one for Routing, Remote Access, Switching, and Troubleshooting). These exams can be taken right now, as they are available, and out of beta stage. They replace the 640-901, 640-604/5/6 exams for individuals working towards their CCNP (though any exams you have already passed in the 604-604/5/6 or 640-901 can be combined with the 642-8xx CCNP series to earn your CCNP/DP).

If you pass the new CCNP routing exam (or switching, or Remote Access, or Troubleshooting), it will renew your CCNA (that's from cisco's site, and the rationale is that if you need to take the current CCNA exam to renew your CCNA, if you take and pass a single CCNP level exam, it implies you need more knowledge to do so, since CCNP > CCNA, etc).

This new policy ONLY applies to people already holding a cisco certification, and will only work on the new exam series.

Actually, I was a little excited when I heard this news too, because at the time I was studying for my CCNP with my CCNA about to expire. However... the 642 exams are not CCNP exams (some of 640 and 643 are).

If you take a look at the exam list at: you can see those 642 exams that will apply towards renewing your CCNA (mostly they are PIX, security and QOS related).

dogbert2 - it says "CCNA and CCDA recertification takes place when a candidate passes the current certification exam or any new exam, bearing the prefix 642, at the Professional or Cisco Qualified Specialist level" Are you sure what you are telling me is correct? The new CCNP exams have 603 as the prefix not 602.

The new exam series for CCNP will start with the prefix 642-

Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks Exam (BSCI 642-801)
Building Cisco Managed Switched Networks (BCMSN 642-811)
Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (642-821 BCRAN)
Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting (642-831 CIT)

If you already have a VALID CCNA, passing any ONE of the exams LISTED above (or passing any CCIE level exam) will renew your CCNA. This information is from cisco's own web site. The new exams can be registered for and taken right now, as the beta exam period is over (only advantage of beta exam is you only pay $50 to take it, and if you pass, it applies towards the cert you are working on, though results may take a while to get during beta period).

In addition, I went to the certifcation tracker to obtain status on current examinations, and here is what I found:

Hi,
Is it okay to pass the BSCI paper 640-901(old exam) before September 7th and then pass all the new exams (643-811 BCMSN Beta, 643-821 BCRAN Beta and 643-831 CIT Beta)
after September 7th.
Would this be okay to get the CCNP cert?

Thank you.

Yes, this is acceptable, the way it works is for CCNP (since there are 2 or 4 exams, depending on which way you do it), cisco realizes it may take someone a while to get through all the exams, so you can mix and match. The rule is however, YOU must take and pass exams before they are retired in order for them to count on your cert. path, if not, you will need to take the newer exam set.

I do NOT know what the 643 series is, unless they are beta examinations, in any event, if your CCNA is going to expire in January, I would get cracking on CCNP study and pass one of the new exams, so your CCNA gets renewed.

Yep now I understand. The exams on the cert tracker are still listed as BETA (643) when they are live they are given a 642 prefix. I a probably going to study for the 640-901 and do the exam in August. Then when the Cisco Press Material comes out in August/September (hopefully) then I will do the 642-811 prior to my CCNA expiring. Easy eh? [surprise]

Thanks for the help.
