IF you were given the choice to build a new CCNA lab what choice router would it be. The least expensive but brand new. Thanks

This router should have at least:
1 BRI interface
2 eth interfaces
1 serial interface

It could be Cisco 800 or 1600 series

I disgree with the ISDN for a CCNA lab. Virtually anything needed at the CCNA level can be emulated by using the AUX ports back to back. THe better bet is the common 2500 series router. It has serial, ethernet, console and AUX ports in various combos. One of the most usable is the 2514 which has dual ethernet and dual serial ports. Along with the AUX port.

Thanks guys. How about a switch. DO I really need a switch also what is a good switch. Thanks

This is a toss up for the CCNA but the two switches covered by Cisco are the 1900 and the 2900. But, the 1900 is a old switch and the 2900 is more usable for future certs like the CCNP. Not to mention the 2900 can do things like trunking on all ports and Etherchannel.

You can get the 2900 as a 2924 (24 ports) or a 2912 (12 port). The 12 port unit tends to be cheaper but not as common.

What I would use for CCNA lab work would be perhaps
2 x 2501 and a 2524/25 with DB-60 and BRI-U tied into
a 1924 (older) or 2924 (better for stuff). With this
hookup, you can go all the way through the CCNP Routing
Exam (640-901 BSCI). Add in another 2524/2525 with BRI-U
and get a ISDN + a POTS simulator and you have all of
remote access covered.
