I have a quick question in regard to the new CCNA Wireless, Security and Voice exams.

I was a Network Academy student and took the older 640-801 series exams (Actually 640-821 and 640-811). I have read that a valid CCNA is the prerequisite for taking the NEW CCNA exams but I have also seen posts in forums that state that the CCENT is required.

My question is do I need to take the CCENT (640-822) in order to take the new CCNA certs even though I am a CCNA??? The reason that I ask is because I am looking at the blue-prints for the Security exam and do not believe that I will have much difficulty in obtaining this cert... (Maybe a month and a half max study from where I am now!)

Thanks Guys!

No. The only reason for the requirement for CCENT is so you don't show up to CCNA Security class and have no clue how to use IOS or have any foundation on basic topics such as subnetting, OSI, TCP/IP. If you have a current CCNA, you should have met the prerequisites for the new CCNA specialization classes. A current CCNA is required if you want to get the additional specialization after you pass the associated exam. Requiring a CCNA to get a CCNA is a little like requiring a CCIE to get a CCNP.

Thanks Clue.... Then I think I will take a shot at a couple of the specialization certs before making the CCNP run!

Cluebird,

I had a girl show up on the first day to my Cisco Academy semester 4 class with the 18 others who had been in semester 1,2 and 3 with me. She needed a "Friday computer class :) "

Since 18 out of the 19 had been in the class for the past 9 months I just passed out the syllibus and started right into a 2 hour lecture on Frame Relay (in great detail) - she left at the 1st break :) :)

No trouble with the pre-req that day !!! You are soo right - nothing worse then doing an advanced class with a student who does not think they need the pre-req!!!

Thanks guys,
I will be honest with you. The CCNA Security looks awesome.. VPN, AAA, Radius etc. Should be a lot of fun!!!

Maczen,

I'm reviewing the curriculum right now along with the Wireless and Voice CCNAs. All three new courses look decent and like a lot of fun. Haven't looked closely at the lab guides, but I usually tweak those significantly so make them less cookbook and more realistic for "real world" (wherever that may be?) At least with networking I've finally found the "big picture".

CiscoGuy33,

Like you, I've had people show up for classes expecting an "easy" A since CCNA is "entry-level". I used to teach Networking Academy but now do the corporate side so we cram a full semester or two in one week.

That's awesome Cluebird,
Would love to peruse those lab guides for self-study when they are done. Let me know if you ever find the location of that fabled "real world"... LoL
