Updates for AVG 6.0 Antivirus Free Edition, which has been widely recommended on this site as an antivirus solution for personal use will be discontinued as of 31st December 2004.

The new free version of AVG 7.0 is available now. People using the older version will be informed of the new version during the update process:

Worth being proactively aware of. They're my product of choice at home.

The future is already here - it's just not widely distributed yet...

Well, I've now been running the new AVG 7.0 Free Edition on a PC upgraded from v6 with no problems for a week of intensive use.
I will be updating other machines when I get to use them next.

My organization uses AVG Enterprise. There are a couple of gotchas to be aware of:[ul][li]I have found AVG to be slow of late updating their virus definitions. I have found 9 virii and worms on my network in the last 3 weeks that AVG did not recognize until I turned virus samples over to Grisoft. And some of these virii were known about by other antivirus vendors months ago. They used to be very good about keeping up-to-date.[/li][li]AVG 7 has a problem detecting virus files on the filesystem if they have the system, hidden, and readonly filesystem attributes set. I am still trying to get their technical support convinced that this is a serious problem.[/li][/ul].

My organization is a public school system in the United States. To be candid, if it were not for the fact that Grisoft gave us 6500 free licenses to the software, we'd have switched to something else a long time ago.
