Ok fellows, I am complete "virgin" to Mitel phone systems and I just had a vendor come in today to install my first one for my Bus Shop (I'm a K-12 school district). I have had some experience with Cisco CME systems only and was a little disappointed he had problem trying to set it up for VLANs. It was pre-setup by someone else in his organization and he was the field engineer to finish the install. He never got VLANs setup today and said he would come back tomorrow after he did a little "testing" on his system. The system had a 16 port switch built in and I know he was used to bigger installs where he uses HP Procurve switches and not the Mitel built-in switch so I'm cutting him a little slack for now.

He's got everything else pretty much setup except for connecting to our paging speakers (pretty small setup with 2 lines, 7 phones, voicemail, and 2 paging speakers with built in amplifiers) but I was wondering if I could get some additional insight on maybe top things ya'll have seen that might get overlooked (ie... Make sure he has bla bla setup, or your going to have problems later or make sure this is set to whatver and life will be better).

He's going to take me through some training tomorrow and I'm sure I'll be digging through all of the screens and options to see what's there and what we might can use over the next couple of weeks.

Also, our software version is 7.5 and when I asked him about getting up to ver 8 he said that I should hold off till I do my Exchange 2007. Does that sound legit?

Ok...maybe 7.something, didn't get a real good look at the screen, but I know it was ver 7

That's why I asked him about ver 8

Depending what is in the warehouse is what you get. But with a new system get to be upgraded to the latest.

Upgrading a Mitel is easier then any other phone system, including CME. It's a "next, next, next, finished" wizard. Very easy.

You have purchased a good phone system, trust me...

Can you give me any insights on common installation
gotcha(s). Anything I need to be specifically asking?

Nope. In all honesty it's a very clean, easy to learn system, with no major bugs.

Just make sure your sets can make calls and your in good shape (seriously).

I'll second what TheMitelGuy says. I've worked on a LOT of Sx-2k's and 3300's (at a lot of K-12 customers as well), and they're really easy to set up and upgrade. Normally the biggest pains with deployment have to do with external factors (network interface, integration with 3rd party systems, cabling, etc.). The programming/turn-up of the Mitel gear itself is pretty foolproof.
