Ok so I just got a refurbed 2948G. But it doesn't any a IOS on it. All the studying i've been doing. I can't quite figure out how to get a IOS on the switch. I understand about TFTP's (kinda) . But I can't find anything on how to actually load an IOS on a clean switch.

what do you mean there is no IOS? can you console in? what does it say? those should have a removeable flash card you can put the IOS on there and boot to that flash card

Scroll down untill you see the heading:

Recovering a System Image Using Xmodem and Ymodem

Hope your bootstrap version is after 12.0(7)W5.15a see below.

Troubleshooting Boot Issues

The booting process of the Catalyst 2948G-L3 and the Catalyst 4908G-L3 is very similar to the booting process of other Cisco IOS routers. One issue is that prior to bootstrap version 12.0(7)W5.15a, xmodem download of the IOS was not supported. Therefore, if there is no IOS image in the bootflash: and the device is in ROMMON mode, then there is no way to recover and the complete device needs to be replaced. ROMMON code is not upgradable in the field. Beginning with bootstrap version 12.0(7)W5.15a, xmodem download is supported.

** Note of the above post....I noticed just now there are 2 versions of the 2948G. The L3 version and the L2 version. I posted the L3 version article, if you have the L2 version as I suspect then you should still be able to xmodem and copy the needed ios over to the switch.

2948G is a layer 2 catos only box if it is truly a 2948G . What does it show when you do a "dir bootflash: ?

Looks like a 2948G layer 2 catos only box . You would need catalyst 4000 code to run this switch . How far does it get in the boot process ? Did you try a "boot bootlash:" command ? If you have your terminal emulator setup correctly you should at least see it start to bootup and if there is no image on it , it will go into rommon mode .

I dont see anything. I plug in and just stare at a terminal screen , it says connected but I'll sit there hitting Enter for what seems like 5minutes. But nothing comes up at all.

Have you plugged into another device to check your emulator ? Is there a system or status light on it and what does it look like after 4 minutes after power on ? Use the following page to try and narrow it down otherwise if you are sure your emulator is ok i would send it back if that's an option , normally even if it does not have an image it will start to boot up and you will see it on the screen and then just end up in rommon mode .

Your emulator is either not correctly set up (likely BAUD) or your switch is dead (NOT likely). Try different baud rates and power off/on the switch every time. I have a few 2980G's so I can help with what exactly you should see...

I use a USB to RS232 cable connected on COM3.
After 4minutes the terminal is still just white.
I'm beginning to even wonder if the USB is actually working with the console.
Even without the USB plugged into the laptop. I still get a white screen.

Looking over the paperwork I got with it. There was a sh ver showing
Mod 1
Port : 0
Model : WS-X2948
and
Mod 2
Port : 50
Model : WS-C2948G

Bootstrap version 4.4(1)

Also, forgot to mention I tryed different Baud rates like you suggested. Same thing is happening.

FINALLY, I reinstalled the drivers for the USB Cord. COM4 then came up and I was able to get into the switch! thanks for all your help guys.
