NT 4.0 Server, Hardware Raid 5, C: is primary partition, E: is extended partition containing application and data. User wants us to install 2000 on the C: partition, leaving the e: partition in tact. User will re-install applications on the e: drive and wants to know if the application will recognize the data files on the e: drive. Application and data are inter-twined so user cannot separate data from application before migration. Is this upgrade scenario possible? Recommended? Any errors or issues that I can except? Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can do the install and not touch the extended partition and all of the data will be intact.

Obviously, as you mentioned, none of the applications will be registrered, and will not run properly until reinstalled.

Most of the unregistered applications will install right over the top of the old ones without issue. Some rare applications, like turbo tax for example, will crash and burn during install if you try to install in the same directory as an existing (even if unregistered) version.

Some applications will overwrite your existing data files with new blank ones during install, so it really would pay to back up just in case. Others seem to be smart enough to recognise the existing files and leave then alone.

If you want to be the safest, why not deinstall all of the applications the user is worried about before the "upgrade"? Most uninstalls either ask if you want to keep your data files, or leave your data files alone.

I hope this helps,
Dana
