first of all, this is a friend's computer, who's not that computer saavy. This is the info I have from him. he's running an Intel 865 chipset motherboard, 3.0GHz processor, XP pro, and just upgraded to a 160GB HDD. in windows (don't know about bios yet), he's showing 133GB of space, not what I was thinking would be closer to 145GB. First thing I'm hoping to find out is if this is normal for a 160GB hard drive (I have an 80GB drive that shows 74.5GB in windows). 2nd, if it's not, what do you think could be causing this much loss in HDD space? I hate faulting hardware, but I'm just not sure what the deal is. any help? thanks!

See if a BIOS update and/or updated chipset drivers solves the problem.

The 160GB drive is 160,000,000,000 bytes. Since there are really 1,073,741,824 bytes in a gig, then you only have 149GB.

Double-check the capacity showing in Windows and the BIOS. It's probably 137GB, which is a limitation of 24-bit LBA. If you have XP, then SP1 or later supports 48-bit. However, the motherboard is the other half of the equation. It must support it also.
