Hi,

I'm looking to create a (probably the smallest possible) network, with one server and one workstation - simply because I'd like the experience. I'm looking to work with NT, with the aim of serving web pages off that server, with software like ColdFusion server and SQL server 7.0.

I don't know anything. I'll make that clear. My only experience is with PWS. I know nothing about networking - but I do know computers pretty well.

I am bothered about the cost - I want to spend less than £350 on the whole shibang - including the server computer which I have yet to purchase, since I don't know what spec. I require. Can you help with this?

Basically, I need advice on what I really need to get going. I know I'm going to make loads of mistakes along the way, but they're all part of the learning process, and I'm looking forward to destroying both machines.

Hopefully I can look forward to a time when I stop talking out of my hat.

Find two used computers in your local paper.

Get the best you can afford - there are plenty about. Since you are going to be the only user you only need one monitor.

With a £350 budget, you seem UK based. Hopefully you already have the software cos NT Server is about £500. Workstation will add about £200...

You need two network cards - cost from £5 each. Need a cable to join them (either a single crossed cable to two straight cables and a hub).

Install the server and the workstation as prompted - take two CDs and call me in the morning...

I'm sure you can find Tial versions of the software...;-)

For the server, you should find some Pentium Pro bargains on various auction sites. PPros make ideal NT4 servers, and with an Adpatec 2940 and the most RAM and the biggest SCSI hard disk you can afford, this will make a server good enough to run an English county council network.

For the workstation, P166 or better. Again, more RAM=good.

You should find machines of these specs within your budget.

Then, take Zelandakh's advice...

Hope this helps
