Ive been stabbing at this subject ,but havnt gotten much out of the responses.But,I am trying to network two PC's,one is a survellence pc,the other will be a standard pc(both Win98).They are currently both connected to a HUB,with the cable modem connected to the uplink port.Both are attached with Cat5 patch cables.The surveillence pc will be utilizing a Static IP from the ISP for REMOTE VIEWING.I want to avoid having to install another NIC in the surveillence pc to use it as a server or ICS server,because the customer already purchased the HUB ,cables ETC.I simply want to make this happen via the hub if possible.Or can this happen this way?Thanks much for any suggestions.

Are you only trying to connect the other pc to the surveillance pc? For what purpose? File sharing? You could use Netbeui for that.

You need to supply more information on what you are trying to do.

cablepuller,

For what you want to do one of the machines, likely the surveillance machine, requires two NICs.

--or--

Toss the hub and use a router for both machines.

cablepuller,

It can be done easily, as suggested to you in two threads.

Excuse my in-expertise in the Networking realm,as I usually post in the cabling forum(After-all,I am just a Cablepuller).I am working with these Surveillence system manufacturers,and im getting mixed info from all sides.They tell me to use a HUB ,but never told me id need an additional Static IP to use a HUB.Then they tell me not to use a Router with NAT,but Best Buy says it will work.Without further confusion,I will get that Best Buy plug and play Router,and give it a try.Thanks all.

Get the router.
Toss the hub.

If you have any further problems post them here.

2 possibilities that don't involve going back to the customer (or your boss man) with more hardware prpoosals.

==>
Get a free internet connection sharer software and load it on the PCs. Lots around.
==>
In the second PC, make the surveillance PC as the gateway to the ISP. One set of private IP addresses for the 2 PCs to talk and one (the gateway) on the survellance PC. Entries in the "hosts" file will be required.
==>

By the way, don't toss the hub. Some routers won't have multiple RJ45 outlets. If you have performance issues, get a switch. (Shouldn't be necessary for 2 PCs)!.
End
