I have two computers connected via crossover cable in NIC's. I'm trying to network the two in order to mainly use the Win98SE machine as a storage bin sort of thing. However, I can't seem to be able to get the network settings right in order to be able to see both computers on the network AND have them both be able to access the internet. I can only do one or the other. Either I can see the computers on the network or I can have them both connected to the internet (through the LAN). I'm at a huge loss. I have set the IP's to 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 and file and printer sharing is enabled. Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

I am not neccessarily qualified to answer the question, but I will give it a shot.

Two methods:
Easy way, purchase a router...it will also act as a firwall, and switch allowing 4+ pcs to be connected.

A harder method...yours might entail this route:

Set up the one pc to connect to the internet, using the external dynamic or fixed ip|dns|subnet mask numbers on the nic card. Test. Give that machine's nic card a second, internal ip address with a different, local subnet mask, give the other a similar internal address, with the same subnet mask.

Remember,IP xxx.xxx.xxx.1 is reserved as the gateway to your network, ie a router or gateway pc. This may play into your setup?

If you get it right, I believe your problem will be solved. I recommend the security of the router. An expert on the subject can fill in the blanks. Jonathan Galpin

Jonathan says he may not be qualified but he certainly has excellent answers.

g7a2i3,
I need to understand a little more about your setup. You have the two computers connected by cross-over cable.
- What is your internet access? Dial-up? DSL?
- How are you sharing the internet? Internet Conn Sharing? Proxy server?

10.x.x.x is a class A IP address. As such, you would not be able to use it on the internet unless you have a router or NAT/proxy software doing address translation.

ok.. on the w2k machien: make a user with the same name and password you use to logon into your w98se computer. Make sure they are both part of the same workgroup. Intall your primary internet connection to the w2k computer. Enable internet connection sharing on the w2k computer only. reboot both computers and you should be all set.
