hello--

I do 2nd level desktop support for a large company and I have a question. We are constantly trying to find computer names based on a user's login ID. Users at my company are authenticated using both acrive directory and novell. We really need a script that will allow you to enter a user's ID and find what computer(s) they are logged into. I've tried using net send along with nbtstat commands in batch files to do this but I've found it to be wildly un-reliable. Anyone out there know a way to do this using active directory? Thanks in advance for any help!

If the client is on the phone with the tech support, you might find a simpler sollution is to put a program called BGINFO.EXE on the client PC's. It provides a text output to the background picture that will list machine name, ip address, username, DNS server, gateway, etc. (configurable on what you wish to post). The client can easily read the data from the background picture to tech support over the phone.

The issue isn't the phone calls to tech support. Those are received by the help desk. I'm 2nd level. I get a log of a help desk call and then I respond to the user to help trouble shoot the problem. I need to be able to enter the user's user id and get back the computer he is logged into. This is possible using net send and nbtstat but its very unreliable. I'm hoping there is some way to do this using active directory.

we run a small app i wrote that queries our domain controllers for current logon sessions and reports back both ip address and station name against each users AD account name.
