Hi,

I have just installed a 2000 server and have 4 XP Pro
desktops.

2 of these worked fine, (right clicked on My Computer,
set the Domain of the server and it logged on ok)

The other 2 will not! I get a message along the lines of:

"A Domain Controller For The Domain "mydomain" Could Not
Be Contacted."

"Ensure That The Domain Name Is Typed Correctly"

"Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain MYDOMAIN:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MYDOMAIN

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

MYDOMAIN
local
. (the root zone)

I can ping the server and have the firewall turned off!
I have tried changing to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and again no luck.

I just have no idea why its not letting me contact the
server.

The usernames and passwords are created in the Active
Directory.

Can anyone help me on this one?

Cheers

Neil

Neil,

You need to make sure that dns is setup correctly on the dc AND the workstations. XP relies almost entirely on dns for it's contact with network authentication and access. You will also need to remove the "." record from your dns server otherwise your workstaions will not find the internet.

It also sounds as if 2 of the pc's have not been joined to the domain correctly, assuming that you have created one.

Please provide more detail on the setup of the networking options on the xp boxes.

Regards

tw

Thanks arteus,

But my problem was my firewall of all things! It was stopping my making the initial connection to the server! I disabled it connected and then enabled it and all was fine!

Cheers anyways

Hi! neilwillis01,

I am not sure if your problems were fixed. But I ran into a similar situation, after all, I fixed my problem. This is what I did;

1. ON my XP professional PC, opened the Local Area Connection's Properties, Deleted the Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, let the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) stays (I could not delete it anyway).

2. Reboot the PC.

3. Installed the Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Then after this, tried to join the domain and then I could join successfully.

Hope this helps other people had similar problems. :)
