I have a problem with a Windows ME laptop here at work. Plain and simple, when I put in a Gateway IP address, it won't access the internet. I pull up winipcfg and the Default Gateway address is blank, though DNS entries are fine and it is getting an IP address from DHCP fine as well. No matter how many times I put in the right Gateway IP address (192.168.0.1) and reboot, I can't get it to work. All the other machines (XP) access the internet with no problem.

Help me.

Thanks.

The Gateway address needs to be sent to the client via DHCP as well as the client IP address. The only information that can remain static (not via DHCP) is the DNS specific info.

If you are using a NT or a Unix box to provide DHCP services, then you need to set the gateway info on the DHCP config script. If you are using a hardware based DHCP server, then the information should be there.

Hope this helps

To use the IP configuration (WINIPCFG) utility

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type:
winipcfg

Click More Info.
To see the addresses of the Domain Name System (DNS) servers that the computer is set up to use, click the ellipses (...) button to the right of DNS Servers.
A DNS is an Internet service that translates domain names into Internet protocol (IP) addresses.

To see address information for your network adapter(s), select an adapter from the list in Ethernet Adapter Information.
Notes

The IP Configuration utility enables you to see the current IP address and other useful information about your network configuration.
You can reset one or more IP addresses. The Release or Renew buttons release or renew one IP address. If you want to release or renew all IP addresses, click Release All or Renew All. When one of these buttons is clicked, a new IP address is obtained from either the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service or from the computer assigning itself an automatic private IP address. For information about assigning a simple IP address, click Related Topics below.

To assign a private IP address for a simple network

Open Network properties in Control Panel.
In the network components list, click the TCP/IP Ethernet adapter.
Click Properties.
Do one of the following:
To assign an automatic IP address, click Obtain an IP address automatically.
To assign a static IP address, click Specify an IP address, and then type the IP address and subnet mask
