Hi folks i recently set up 3 brand new computers in a remote office (i wont be there and dont have any real remote access so good securtiy is a must)

the computers will all be connected to one another by a broadband router, which also connects to a MultiFunction Printer

the router has some of its own inbuilt networking controls, now i could just leave the computers individually to share the printer (file sharing is not a big deal here) but getting some sort of authrorisation would be good so should i set up the 3 PCs to work as a work group or just set 1 PC aside as a server PC.

i dont think the latter would suit to be honest as its not a high tech office and i dont intend it to be, i want it to remain self sufficient if i cant get down there

thanks in advance!

yorkshirepudding,

Don't know your needs???
As I understand, this a small remote office...Part of a larger office???
If so; would you require/like this office to communicate with the home office electronically???

What is your def of authorization?

Do you have a server in the home office???

Possible setup:

Using broadband, make small office PC's part of the home office domain (logon on authorization).
You can then remotely manage the PC's (presence not required)

Firewalls can provide some security, encryption between sites can provide additional.

If you have a mail server, all mail can be handled along with calendars & schedules if desired.

If you are using Win XP you can implement logon authorization locally to each machine one or many users with out a server or server authorization.

hi there!

i actually finshed setting up the machines today and i have set up passwords to each machine and setup a windows workgroup to share resources i found this to be ideal, i will however have to make some changes again as i have now wirelessly networked the machines together through a wifi broadband router

yorkshirepudding,

Happy to hear that you found a solution to your liking.
