I'm loosing what little hair I have left - the backups are doing fine, however, when the NetWorker wants to save the index of the backup, it requests the Default volume. Does one have to label an 'Index' volume?

My hair will thank you.

I am sure you run incremental backups and write them to a
specific pool where you set the level 'incremental'.

This is good for the date but not for the index backups as
NW in this case will aqssign the level 9 to those backups.
The reason for that is to minimize the number of index
backups you need to recover in case of a disaster.

Solution: Specify your pool setup for "incr" and level "9"
backups.

Just in case you use storage nodes.

Networker tries to backup Indexes on a tape device connected to the server. So check your pool configuration and that you've available device and media for backup on the backup server.

Never personally tested this but since NW 6.0 i think only
the bootstrap must be saved locally at the NW server.

Please excuse the obvious as I'm getting baptized by fire with this implementation - so what you're saying is that there must be at least one tape set aside to hold the bootstrap info? They have version 6.1.3 running. Should it be labeled something specific, or simply let it go to 'Default'?

Thanks for the help :)

Yes, there must be a local backup media for the bootstrap.
It of course does not matter what type it is (tape, disk or
optical).

The label itself does not matter. Such is a help for you,
but NW does not really use it as it relys on the internal
volume id. So it does not matter to which pool you write.

However, with respected to disaster recovery operations,
let me suggest that you backup index and index backups to
a separate pool.

Exactly ...
Chukster, sorry for my answer, I did not wanted to say that you need a dedicated tape device, but yes , you need at least one device on the server such as 605 said.

Not a problem sdeb, the client is okay with the indexes going to the Default tape. He knows where it is now.

Thanks for the info :)
