Seems like I'm having all kinds of problems, lately.

Tried to open the Admin GUI, and started getting the message "Program not registered" when attempting to connect to the NetWorker server.

Checked services, and the "NetWorker Backup and Recover Server" service wasn't started.

Tried to start it, and I get the following message:

"Could not start the NetWorker Backup and Recover Server service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

I'm stumped here.

Should I reinstall the server? That won't screw up all my configured clients and indexes on the machine, will it?

OK, wild.

I just checked daemon.log (probably should have done that prior to posting).

I've got this:

03/28/05 12:03:17 PM nsrd: server notice: started
03/28/05 12:03:27 PM nsrmmdbd: media db is cross checking the save sets
03/28/05 12:03:39 PM nsrd: nsrmmdbd has exited with status 5
03/28/05 12:03:39 PM nsrd: shutting down
03/28/05 12:03:39 PM nsrd: RAP error: there are more clients connected than number of licenses.
03/28/05 12:03:39 PM nsrd: successful shutdown

How do I determine which licenses I need, and how do I add them via the command line, since I can't via the GUI?

ARGH.

OK, so.

I try to run 'nsradmin' and get the following error:

nsradmin: RPC error: Program not registered
nsradmin: There does not appear to be a NetWorker server running on nbacknt.mmc-sil.com.

I try to run "nsrlic" or "nsrlic -v", and get the following error:

connecting to nbacknt.mmc-sil.com ...
nsrlic: RPC error: Program not registered
nsrlic: nsrd did not respond. nsrd must be started before running nsrlic.
If nsrd is running, you may have exceeded a resource limit.

Unfortunately, I can't start nsrd, because of that RAP error above.

What gives? nsrd won't start because there are more clients then licenses, and the utilities that would allow me to add licenses won't start because nsrd won't start?

Am I missing something?

The number of client licenses can of course become an issue. However i doubt that this prevents a NW server from starting up. Of course you could not do new backups but the server should start up even if there is this license problem.

Anyway. On the server you should copy the directories
/nsr/index
/res/mm
/nsr/res
to a save location.

Then delete the client directories in /nsr/index until you meet the number of licenses or less (hard to tell right now, correct).

However, i suspect the media db (/nsr/mm) to be defect. In this case you must do a NW "disaster recovery" with mmrecov.
