We use NetWorker 7.1.2 for Windows (Windows 2000 SP4 on servers and clients). Last week our colleagues upgraded one client to Windows 2003 Standard (let's say W2KCLN).
My colleague created in NetWorker Administrator new client (W2K3CLN).
Backup of this new client finished with error, for lack of licences.
I tried delete rename client W2KCLN to W2K3CLN - delete client W2KCLN and W2K3CLN, stop NetWorker services, delete index of W2K3CLN and rename index of W2KCLN to W2K3CLN, start services and create client W2K3CLN with client id of W2KCLN.
But NetWorker said, that W2K3CLN detected with different client id. It means that I can create only W2K3CLN with new client id and index size is 0.
I wanted to rename client W2KCLN to W2K3CLN to be able to restore file from W2KCLN with only one client defined in NetWorker Administrator.
Is there any solution ?

Thanks for help.

To my knowledge, renaming a client is not possible. It would not be useful as this would also lead to a lot of file duplicates.

With respect to licensing, this should not matter as NW will only check licenses during backups.

Not sure a follow everything but here goes. =) Renaming a client works fine, renaming a backupserver is a bit more work but quite possible. Here´s how to rename a client. Remember that the NetWorker server must be able to resolve the name, so the client must actually exists with that hostname. And if you did not paste in the clientid when creating the new client, you will need to rename it again and do it all from step 1.

1) Copy the clientid från the old client
2) Delete the client definition
3) Stop NetWorker services on the server
4) Rename index directory to new name
5) Start services
5) Create the new client and paste the old clientid in the
clientid field, which is enabled when you create a new
client.

Now you should be able to browse the index of the old client from the new. Also take a look at page 212 of the NW admin guide.

Cheers!

Problem is that new client wasn't renamed, but created first with new client id. In NetWorker Adminstrators there were 2 clients with 2 different client id.
Then I deleted new client and its index directory - without problem.
Then I tried to rename old client to new client (procedure from Admin guide), but it failed at step 5, because there was error "Found client:W2K3CLN, client ID: <new_client_id>. Specify this client ID or leave client ID blank. Otherwise the client name must first be renamed.".
I don't know ho to force NetWorker to forget client id when I delete client.

Like i said, if you have created the new client and did not copy/paste the old clientid (follwing the instruktions in the admin guide), there is no way back but to once again rename the client and then perform the procedure the correct way. You only get one chance to get i right, the clientid is stored somewere and cannot be deleted (to my knowlegde anyway).

Cheers!

There is a mminfo switch that lists client ids on the server, also, i have renamed clients often no problem as long as you use the same client id.
last resort you can plug in old or new aleas in aleas feild to fool the networker. ( depending on which client is working) You might also be able to use cmd line admin program to edit resource db.
