Here is my dilema. I'm a network administrator in my job and they are wanting to send me for some certs but don't want to spend a lot.

I have taken an A+ course about 2 years ago but never took the test to get certified.

Would it be ok to start of with the Network+ cert track as the A+ doesn't really apply much to my job does it. I mean I may do a little hardware fixing but anything too big I just take to our vendor to be fixed. What do you guys think?

That could certainly work. Go with your strengths. Grab a copy of the Network+ exam objectives, gather some resources and jump right in. Best of luck.

I did the Network+ beta exam back in Decemember and finally got told I passed last week.

Exam seemed pretty easy to me and I spend a lot more time doing server and back end than networking.

CompTIA exams seem pretty expensive to me though.

If I remember correctly you can put A+ towards an MCSE or MCDSA qual. but not Network+.

ntinlin,

Just to comment on your comment about Microsoft certification, the A+ and Network+ together count for the MCSA elective, but not the MCSE elective requirement.

Security+ would count as the elective for either, unless you choose to persue a specialization in Messaging (MCSA: Messaging or MCSE: Messaging).

There are no CompTIA exams that qualify as electives for MCDBA, unfortunately.

Thx for the help guys. I might try reading up on the A+ and seeing if I can pass as two years ago I took some classes on it but never took the test.

Actually, they kind of qualify for the MCSE requirement, if you take the MCSA track and then pursue the MCSE (which most likely is more expensive) I think that the Security+ and the net+ would be the way to go though, because then you will have an idea about protecting the network....

I think you will be OK passing the Network+ although I didnt have many hardware questions on mine. Well only questions related to Network specific hardware no questions that were more suited to A+ IMHO.

Watch out though I was really worried at one point in my exam because I had three obscure questions about Token ring in a row. ;) I passed with a score of 820 just make sure you study I used the Sybex Network+ Study Guide, Mike Meyers Network+ Certification Passport and the Exam Cram Practice questions.

Looking to book Linux+ soon so that should be fun :)
