hi

one of my customers has satellite broadband. Their upload limit has been brought down to 8 kbps. There is no virus on the network and it is not an open relay system for spamming. all the isp say is that there is huge traffic on the line. how can i find out where the traffic is originating on the lan in order to stop the problem???? please help

Is it a Cisco router? You can turn on ip accounting on the LAN interface and it will show who is talking and by volume to the router.

If not, I think you may need to consider some kind of network probe which you can attach to the LAN to listen to traffic destined for the WAN. It will be able to capture who's sending traffic and, if it's a decent probe, who the top talkers are by volume.

do you know any good ones??? i need to know which pc is causing all the unneccessary traffic

you could take the connection from the lan interface and stick it in a hub.. then just run ethereal or some other sniffing software on a pc and watch.

if ou search im sure youll find many free sniffing programs

im sure there are other ways on the router with access-lists though that you could log.
