Which traffic would be preferable over a slow link, a client getting DHCP/DNS/AD login information, or a server replicating AD information? Are both types of traffic broadcasts? Or is replication traffic unicast?

AD Replication. That's what AD Sites are for.

Replication traffic is not broadcast, but more to the point you can actually control replication intervals, times, and criteria over slow links. You have no control over when users reboot their machines and log in. If you're at the 2008 functional level you can leverage DFS-R instead of NT-FRS for your AD replication as well, making it even more efficient.
