Hi Guys,
I am building a small network at home, it will consists of about four pc's. What is the best suited network topology to be used and why?

OK, this has nothing to do with VPNs, but I will try.

The highest throughput Local Area Network will be wired to a single switch.

In your case, many vendors make a NAT router with a 4 port switch built in. Alternatively, you may need a larger switch, and run one cable to the router. (this cable would only be a bottleneck if the ISP was as fast as your LAN)

A switch only sends packets to the device that they are addressed to, a hub sends them to every device, which limits the throughput of the LAN, WiFi acts as a hub, so wireless is fastest for a single device and then gets shared from there, slowing the active devices down.

Multiple switches can be used on one network, but you never get more throughput between them than the speed of the 'trunk' between them. In many SOHO LANs, local speed is not a concern, most traffic is to the internet. (Never use multiple routers on one LAN)

I prefer Cable to DSL, mostly due to customer service issues, both are better than satellite, which is better than dial up. More niche players are Wireless and ISDN, both preferable to satellite.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Router---switch----pc's

the router may have a switchport built in.
