Hi There,

I have inherited a network by helping out a friend and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice.

Currently, the settings on the computers that are active and working are:

IP 10.78.222.XX
Subnet 255.255.255.128
Gateway 10.78.222.1
DHCP 10.78.222.2
DNS 10.251.16.20

Now comes the problem...

They have a brand new server that they want to use for a new domain (The person who was in charge left on bad terms and can not be reached). The server settings are:

IP 10.78.219.5
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 10.78.219.1

My problem is that no computer on the network can "see" this server even if I manual assign IP addresses. My thinking is that this has something to do with the way the network is subnetted. I know that there are routers in the building but we do not have access to them. Is there any way around this or do I need more information?

Thanks

You are correct the new server is on a different subnet to the rest of your network. The router configuration must be preventing hosts on 10.78.222.x subnet from reaching 10.78.219.x subnet

You can either assign your server an address from the 222 range or you will have to speak to your router admin

One thing to bear in mind is that your 222 subnet has a mask of 128 so you actually have 2 subnets with 222 in 3rd octet so host with address 222.127 will be on a different subnet to host with address 222.129

Hope this helps
