Network Speed

hi people
i did a recent migration from novell to sbs 2003 with 5 new pcs running xp. since the install the pcs are hanging a lot and a network accounts program opens sometimes and not other times. i changed the switch and still the same. do ye have any ideas on what it could be ???

Make sure that your server and it's switch port have their speed and duplex forced to say... 100Mb Full Duplex. Your workstations and their switch ports can both be left at auto negotiate (they will automatically negotiate to 100Mb Full Duplex, but it is best to force the server and it's switch port).

Aside from that, ensure that your default gateway and subnet mask are correct on your server and workstations.

all gateway and masks are right. dns is right too. server is set to auto as with all our other sites. switch is unmanaged so cant change duplex speed on it

I am not sure if this will help any, but what ver of Novell were you using? If it was 4 or below you were using IPX did you make sure your IPX protocol was disabled in your workstation NIC's? Also make sure you got all of the client32 software off the machines, it may be trying to contact the server and bogging down your network.

Just a thought, let me know what happens

Did your remove IPX/SPX protocol from the computers?

If not then the default protocol will probably be IPX/SPX so that your clients try communicating via this first before using IP.

I'd go with ncotton...Double check the DNS settings making sure the SBS server points to itself and all clients point to it for DNS resolution not your ISP's servers.
