Netware 5.0 Server.
Dell PowerEdge4300
when running a program in visual basic 6.0 it take 3 1/2 minutes
to run
across the T-1. When I copy a 17mb file it take awhile to copy
across the
wan.
When I run this on the local lan where the server resides it
takes seconds.
I've updated the lates intel drivers
I've increased my MTU to 18000 on my serial interfaces on my
routers
My max physical packet size is 2048
I've installed 2 new 2620xm routers
I've installed 2 new 2950 xl switches
I've change my network cable from the switch to the router
I've change my wan cable to a cat5 e cable.
I'm running 100mpbs / full duplex on everything.
I using the latest version client32 483.1 sp1
I have the latest sevice pack on my server.
I've update the bios
I've updated the memory to 2Gigs
I'm using a Intel Pro 100+ Server Adapter (PILA470B) This card
came with the
server Not sure if I need to upgrade.

Have you ever tried to shove a Saint Bernard through a cat door?
Cause thats what your doing. ;-)

Lets think about this one a bit more;

A T1 line has a bandwidth of 1.55~ MegaBits, your local LAN runs at 100 MegaBits. So when your running your Visual Basic app accross the T1, the performace you are getting should be expected. You are pushing an app through a itty bitty teenie tinny pipe on your WAN when compared to the phat pipe you have on your local LAN.

So stop pulling hair out over this, it's a NOT issue.

If it's your manager making you figure this one out, tell him/her you can fix it no problem. Just add a few million to the IT budget and have 65 T1 lines installed. ;-) Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

Would upgrading to Netware 6 increase my performance? and would my performance be better if I make my remote lan 10/full instead of 100/full?

I wouldn't blane you for not understanding what Provogeek was on about, but what you have to understand is no matter if you upgrade to NW6 or change your LAN speed to (the slower) 10Mb Full Duplex, the speed of your WAN link will still remain the same.

To put what Provogeek said into simple terms, you'd need to increase your WAN link from a Skoda to a Ferrari in order to get the results you are after. Also, to put it into another context, your T1 WAN link is around 65 times slower than your 100Mb Full duplex LAN, hence Provogeek's "suggestion" of getting 65 T1 lines installed between your buildings. -----------------------------------------------------
