We have a Dell Poweredge 2300 with dual P3-500 256Mb Ram, 3com 3C980b tx Server NIC, running NT 4 server and SBS 4.5 and a 3com Office connect hub

Client machines running either 2000 or 98, all with 3com 905b tx NICs

Files copy from the server to client very fast but when copying a file from client to server very slow (4Mb takes upto 2 minutes or worse). All machines running just TCP/IP.

Any help much appreciated

How many PC's total? If you are running less than 25 systems then install NetBEUI. This can sometimes speed up traffic. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

Slow network performance is something that I've had appear after a SP6a upgrade, and the above kb article and fix corrects it. Also, it is very important to have the latest drivers for the 3c905b, as there were issues with one particular set. As to NetBEUI, yes it is faster, but does not support the internet or other routing, and has conflicts with certain applications.

In reply to butchrecon, We only have a small network of 6 systems, but problem occurs with only one client and server connected.
Tried NetBeui but no real increase in speed.
Thanks anyway.

In reply to Sharder, 3c905b driver are the most current, Thanks for the kb link will check this one out, certainly looks possible.
