Hello,
I have set up an WINXP Pro Computer and disabled simple file sharing. I set up a couple of new users and shared a folder, removed the everyone permission and allowed only these users to access.
If from a remote computer I try to access the share, I get the message "xxxxxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Access is denied.". If I map a drive with the DOS "net use X: \\computer\share password /user:user" the drive maps correctly and I am able to access the drive.
Could someone tell me for what reason Windows is not prompting with "normal" credentials popup?
By the way I have already removed all connections to that computer with the "net use * /D" command.
Thank you in advance for any help.

You show in your example that you are typing a password and username when using net use at a command prompt. Are you sure the username and password you are typing doesn't have permission?

Try that command again without specifying either one. You should then get a prompted for credentials.

start -> run > 'control userpasswords2' [return]

In the dialog box that comes up, click on the Advanced Tab. Then click on the Manage Passwords button.

From there make sure there is no reference to the machine you are trying to connect to. If there is remove it, and o.k your way out.

Then try to connect to the machine again through explorer. It should now bring up the user/password prompt.

Thank you. I had already checked in the cached passwords with the 'control userpasswords2', and removed everything, but still the credentials popup will not come.
The strange thing I have setup a second computer with the same sharing scheme, tried to access from a third computer, and still got no popup.
My computers are not in a domain and all part of the same workgroup. Could this be the issue? You have to part of a domain?
On the other hand I have a NAS on the network, and when I connect to him I get the credentials popup. This means that the client computers are working correctly.
Thank you for any help, because this issue is making me crazy since a couple of days.

I actually have the same issue in a domain, none of the workstations can get that authentication pop-up and I have tried anything I found on all forums but I still get the same freaking access denied window. I know I have no access but I need to be prompted so that I can enter the right credentials. I think this is a local policy thing on the machine that you are trying to access, if you find a solution post it please, I tried so many things, I give up.

Besides the actual Sharing Permissions have you looked at the NTFS Access Permissions too and made sure they are correct?

On the Advanced tab of the Security tab page have you tried the "Effective Permissions" tab to see what that tells you about access?

Are there any Firewall or other security programs that could be hindering any access?

What operating system is the Remote Computer, is that XP too?

Sometimes just removing the shared access and then recreating it might work.
