Hi,

I want to move a workgroup to a domain.

I am installing 2003 server. The clients are a mix of 2000 and xp pro.

We are using SBC DSL presently (dynamic IP) ...and I understand I would need two NIC to make this work in a domain environment.

I would like all workstations to have a static IP (does 10.10.1.xxx work?)

I assume dhcp would be shut off on the router?

My question is this how do I setup the 2 NICs on the server. I know I should use a static IP of say 10.10.1.2 for the NIC going to the switch(assuming router is 10.10.1.1). How would the other NIC be handled?

My client setup would be:
IP 10.10.1.xxx
subnet 255.255.255.0
DNS server 10.10.1.2
gateway 10.10.1.1

Do I have to setup forward zones? I believe ive done this using the SBC DNS servers...but would like a double check on the procedure

I know...a lot to ask....but any help would be appreciated

You can do this all with one NIC in the server. Put an inexpensive firewall like a LinkSys Cable/DSL Router in between the DSL Modem and your server. Configure the LinkSys with your Internet Public IP. Set forwarding on the LinkSys to forward Port 25 to your server IP to let mail through. Forward port 3389 if you want to allow RDP remote access. Forward port 21 for FTP etc.

Not a good idea to just connect your server directly to the DSL modem.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

A domain means Active Directory. Your server should be (at least) the DHCP server and have AD-integrated DNS.

Use a cheap firewall as said before, only one NIC in the server. DHCP in the router is OFF. Install server OS, configure AD (allow it to create integrated DNS), configure forwarders for outside DNS. Now install DHCP and scope on the server and set to pass gateway etc. to clients and to register in DNS.

Settings look like this:
SBC Modem DHCP ON (public address 192.168.0.123, DHCP scope 192.168.123.1-2)
Router/Firewall DHCP OFF (wan port is DHCP CLIENT from modem...192.168.0.123, LAN address is static at 192.168.123.1)
Server NIC Static IP 192.168.123.10, DNS 127.0.0.1, Gateway 192.168.123.1)
Server DHCP scope 192.168.123.50-252
DHCP passes DNS server of 192.168.123.10
DHCP passes Gateway of 192.168.123.1
Server DNS configure forwarder to SBC DNS (192.168.0.1)
