Hi,

I'd be grateful for advice on services I can safely stop in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf. Basically, the box we use needs only a telnet connection to it. I wish to disable whatever services aren't used, but don't want to screw up other facilities which may depend upon them.

Any advice/links much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you disable everything in inetd.conf except telnet , ie comment every line except the telnet line, then inetd wont start anything automatically when a socket connection is attempted. This could only screw up another service if something external is expecting that service to be available which would mean your original statement of only needing telnet services would be incorrect ;)

I would suggest leaving the /etc/services file alone and check what daemons are started in /etc/rc2.d and if you think you don't need something that starts "S##progname" , just mv it to "oldS##progname", restart your system , and see if everything still works as you expect it to.
This will be a trial and error situation but in the long run your system will run more efficiently without all the extras taking up process time.

Have Fun
