i have 2 computers connected into a "network everywhere" 4 port router. before i broke everthing down to remodle my office, everything worked fine. i had file share, printer share, internet share. i am running xp on both machines with 10/100 ethernet. when i set everthing back up (the same as before) the #2 machine would not connect to the router. when i plugged the cable into any port, the lights on the router would not even light up nor would the lights on the ethernet card. #1 computer lit up fine when it was plugged into the router and connected to the internet fine. i thought maybe the ethernet card went bad, so i plugged it into the cable modem directly. bingo, it worked fine. unplugged it from the modem and back into the router and no lights, no nothing. i've recycled the modem, router, and computers. #1 workes fine, #2 does not. all of my network settings are the same as before. i called "network everywhere" and they had no clue. does anyone?

i figured it out. i had a bad ethernet cable, 2 of them as a matter of fact. even though it would allow me to connect to internet it would not communicate with the router. as a last resort i bought a new cable and it worked.

Did you need a specific type of cable? I am having exactly the same problem--two cables do not work with my Linux machine, but Windows machine is fine.
