The Router is connected to a T1 line.
Between the Router and the Firewall (Symantec 200) I have a Cross Over cable.
Attached to the firewall are 8 LAN ports, so in a sense this device is also suppose to act as a switch.
Between the Firewall and the computer I have a straight thru cable.

I have given the firewall wall an IP address that is in conjunction with the router, along with the LAN subnet mask (via the serial configuration).
On the TCP/IP settings of the computer, I have only placed the IP Address (that is in conjunction with the Firewall and the router), the LAN Subnet Mask, and the Gateway IP.

When I reboot the computer (it is running Windows XP Home Edition), The connection to the network turns on. However when I ping from the MS-DOS prompt to either the firewall or the router, I receive a "Request Time Out" and the Connection to the network is "...unplugged". Then the connection to the network is back on. Then it goes back off, etc, etc.

Meanwhile I'm trying to find out TCP information and type in netstat commands for the port listening and also trying to route the computer to the new ip settings. I am unable to route the ip settings and when I double check the computer ports that are listening, I receive information that is not in line with what I typed in the TCP/IP Connections.
I have also double checked the computer settings via "ipconfig" command to make sure that the computer is reading the IP Configurations correctly, and it is.

Any ideas on what else I should try or need to do? Sould I switch the cable to a crossover instead of a straight thru?

Thank you in advance!

Since I got my answer via other sources, I am going to answer my own question (to help others as I have seen that in this forum there have been some question concerning the connection to the Symantec 200).

For the Symantec 200 Firewall/VPN device I needed "alike" cables, or in other words, straight thru from the router to the device and straight thru from the device to the computer OR cross over from the router to the device and cross over from the device to the computer. Once I got my two cables to match up, I was able to connect into the MAIN SETUP screen of the Firewall and go from there.

The thing that had thrown me this whole time was the fact that in the manual it says to connect a straight thru to the device and I'm not a networking junkie.

Hope this help those of you that are having issues that are similar to this.
