Hi
I have two machines at home, they are linked via network cards. One has Win98 SE on it, the other has UNIX running on it.
I can ping both ways using the IP addresses
eg 192.1.168.42
(this is the Unix address)
or 192.1.168.43
(this is the Win98 address)

but if I try and ping using the hostname it just times out. I have added the following entry in the hosts.sam file.

192.1.168.42 unixbox

Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on ?

Is unixbox the name of your server?

Find just the hosts file not the hosts.sam. If you do not have one, just create one and call it hosts with no extension on it. Place your entry in there.

On the unix box you will need to add your win98 machine name to the /etc/hosts file.

Also, if the hosts file on the Win98 machine still doen't work, the add the entry to your lmhosts file.

Hi Comtec17

Thanks for your reply, the Win98 machine doesn't have the
'hosts' file. I never even thought to create it. I asummed that Win98 looked in the hosts.sam file.

And I have already got the hosts file on the Unix box set up.

Thanks again

Kelvin
