Hey guys, I've got a problem here and it's really blowing my mind on what is doing it.

First of all, let me simplify things. I'm having the problem on a global scale from several different systems, however we'll just focus on 2 of them.

System Information:
Dell Dimension 2400 (XP Pro)
Dell Dimension 2400 (XP Home)

Network Setup:
100mbit through a Linksys switch

Network Services, Clients, Protocols:
Client for MS Networks
File and Printer Sharing
TCP/IP

Internet Connection Firewall: Disabled

Ok, this is the problem at hand. Basically I have the My Documents folder shared and within that folder are a number of subfolders. The contents of which are various files, but about 95% of them are Wordperfect files.
I'm not sure whether or not the problem is contained to just wordperfect files or not. I haven't had a problem opening, copying, renaming any other file types. However, like I said about 95% are wordperfect files, therefore there aren't very many files that are of other types to get a definite answer on if it's isolated to just wordperfect or not.

So anyway, on average I'd say 1 in every 100-150 files out of a good 3000-4000 files is inaccessible though the network. When I attempt to open it on the network I receive an error message, stating either the file is in use or access denied, blah blah.

What I've Tried is below.

1. Installed IPX/SPX protocol
2. Made sure the guest account was active
3. Moved the guest account into the administrators group
4. Created a duplicate user account on the system attempting to be accessed, of which the username is exactly the same as the user trying to access it over the network.
5. Made sure the systems were all under the same workgroup
6. Made sure simple file sharing was enabled (Is this not an option under XP Home?) I couldn't find the checkbox, however, I have the same problem under 2 systems running XP Pro.
7. Turned off file indexing on the hard drives
8. Selected all the files within a folder that contains files giving me problems and re-applied the attributes to them. I checked read-only and applied, then unchecked and applied.
9. I made certain the computer names didn't have any spaces in them.
10. I made certain the network cabling was the problem was actually moving the two systems in question to a known-good setup in another building.
11. I've set all services to Manual if they were previously disabled, just thinking possibly something was hanging it up with authentication or whatever.

Any Ideas? I'm almost to the point of formatting one of the systems and switching it to FAT32 to see if that corrects the problem or not.

One solution though, If I copy the file in question and then paste a new copy of it. Then any system on the network can access it perfectly fine..

Please help if you can..

You can check the images below if seeing the exact error messages helps any. One is when I was trying to copy the file over the network and the other message is just trying to open it through the network in wordperfect.

oh, and yes before someone asks.. i am certain that the files are not in use on the system. even restarting the system where the files are located and then trying to access them immediately from a networked computer still provides the same error.

1. Installed IPX/SPX protocol
remove it

2. Made sure the guest account was active
Okay

3. Moved the guest account into the administrators group
remove it

4. Created a duplicate user account on the system attempting to be accessed, of which the username is exactly the same as the user trying to access it over the network.

I note now that you have no mention of a password. In a Windows network setting get used to the notion that you logon with a username and password. It can be worked around, but just get used to it. All users of computer A are given username and passwords on Computer B, and vice-versa throughout the Workgroup.

5. Made sure the systems were all under the same workgroup
Identical workgroup names; unique COMPUTER names

6. Made sure simple file sharing was enabled (Is this not an option under XP Home?) I couldn't find the checkbox, however, I have the same problem under 2 systems running XP Pro.
Run Explorer (not IE), Tools, Folder Options, View, near the bottom you will find the Simple File Sharing option.

7. Turned off file indexing on the hard drives
Irrelevant to your problem

8. Selected all the files within a folder that contains files giving me problems and re-applied the attributes to them. I checked read-only and applied, then unchecked and applied.
Irrelevant to your problem

9. I made certain the computer names didn't have any spaces in them.
Irrelevant to your problem

10. I made certain the network cabling was the problem was actually moving the two systems in question to a known-good setup in another building.
Good. So you know it is not an adapter or cable issue

11. I've set all services to Manual if they were previously disabled, just thinking possibly something was hanging it up with authentication or whatever.
Not only irrelevant to your problem, but could well have made things worse. Please go to the BlackViper site and download and apply his registry fix to restore XP Pro or Home to the default settings for services:
Then follow the instructions here in detail:
Now to address the file issue.
. Address the SMB signing issue
. Address the opportunistic locking issue

Finally, do this at all client workstations, Win9x -- XP:

I am having the same problem. I have not ever seen the problem with Microsoft Office I am beginng to think it is a WP11 Problem.... I did find this on the wp site.. Access Denied error message when opening a document on a shared drive in a network environment

Details
WordPerfect 11 may generate an access denied error message when opening a document located on a network share.

This error may occur when the share is located on an NTFS partition.

Answer
This issue has been reported to development.

but no answer

i'm experiencing the same problem on a system with both xp pro and home computers accessing an excel file... how can two users access this file?

I have just encountered the same issue in attempting to transfer WP11 files accross a network, either manually or using the offline files synchronizing function. Corel told me today (Dec. 2, 2003) they are aware of the problem, attributing it to "default file permissions that are not being set" but they don't expect a resolution in the near future ("[t]he expected patch is still a little ways away...I can tell you for sure it will not be fixed by next week"). As far as I can tell, this does not affect WP9.
