I am having trouble setting up a network printer in Novell 4.11:

Using NWADMIN:
I create a print queue: HP4_queue
I create a printer: HP4_po
I assign the print queue to the printer
I assign the printer to an existing print server SERVER_SYS
I exit NWADMIN

I unload & reload the pserver.nlm from the console at the Server. When it loads I see the printer I just created.

I connect the printer to a new WIN98 workstation
From the workstation:
I call up NPTWIN95.exe
I choose NDS Printers
I browse & locate the printer
I double click

I get amessage box that tells me:
"Printer Purch_po.TREENAME on print server SERVER_SYS is already in use. Please select another printer"

Why is this printer already in use, I just created it? What did I do wrong, or what do I need to do next?

HI.

In Netware Administrator, double click the printer object,
and in the "Configuration" page, click the "Communication" button.
Now change the printer from "Local (Auto Load)" to "Remote (Manual load)". This means that the printer is connected to a workstation rather then the server itself.

This should fix the problem.

But you might get another problem at the Win98 workstation after fixing the first one.
If you get something like "LPT1 is not supported" on the workstation, you should open REGEDIT, search for "PORTNAME" that maps to LPT1, and rename it once to "PORTNAME1", then to "PortName" - CASE SENSITIVE BUT WITHOUT QUOTATION MARKS!

Yizhar,
Thanks for the quick response. I checked the Configuration page of the printer in NWADMIN and it was already set to manual. Do you have any other suggestions?

I checked NPTWIN95.exe from a WIN95 machine with a network printer and I can connect to purch_po from that machine! Perhaps it is an incompatability between Win98 and the Version of Client32 I am using? I spent a few hours yesterday browsing the Novell site and cant come up with a fix.

Prior to reading your post, I also downloaded the patch 95331 from the Novell site. What a mistake that was. After I installed the patch, Client32 did not work at all! I had to reload my old client.

Thanks,
Craig

Just curious. What kind of printer is it?

I had a HP Deskjet 920c which I hooked up to one workstation (named Billing2), loaded the software on all the PCs which were to access the printer (including the one it was attached to), then went into Network Neighborhood properties on "Billing2" and clicked on file and print sharing. I clicked the "I want others to print on my printer". I okay'd everything, then went around to the other printers I had put the printer software on, looked up the printer control panel, clicked properties on the printer I wanted, then went under the Details tab, entered "LPT1: (\\BILLING2\HP)" which is where the printer is physically connected, and okay'd everything there. That way, everytime someone logged into the network on those three computers, they had access to the printer.

The reason I did it this way was only 3 workstations were going to use this printer, the old laser printer broke and became unrepairable, and I couldn't figure out how to do it from the server itself. @=/ Anyway, if you need something quick and dirty, this might help.

Catadmin - New to Server Admin, but willing to learn... All help is appreciated.

HI.

As I wrote before, there is a problem with Win98 and NPTWIN95.EXE:
