Thanks for any help you can provide. I am not sure what is happening here.

I have two machines. One win2k, one win98SE. The win2k has a Lexmark x83 usb printer
that I have shared. I have also added the user of the win98SE computer to the user
list of the win2k computer. Both computers are in the same workgroup and can see
each other.

When I go to add a network printer in the win98SE computer I see the shared printer
of the win2k computer and I can add it. I have downloaded the latest drivers and
they seem to load fine. At the end, I see the Lexmark x83 in the win98SE printers
folder, But only for 1 second. Then it disappears and is not loaded as a printer.

I have unshared and reshared the printer on the win2k computer and removed and redownloaded
the driver on teh win98SE computer. I am at a loss as to what else could be wrong.
The weird thing is, the (unmentioned) third machine winXP, can add the usb network
printer and print to it without problem.

I am leaning toward a usb/win98SE compatibility issue, by process of elimination.

I don't have time to get a test print off. Less than 2 seconds. It appears in the print folder after being added, then disappears.

Maybe it is a WIN98SE setting that if not found could be cured with reloading the OS over itself.???? The XP machine has no problems adding the printer then printing to it.???

what about trying to install the printer on the 98 machine. (I mean directly to the 98 machine). Then see if the the icon remains if it doesn't it could mean an incompatability or a OS problem. You could then try to share the printer via the 98 machine to the XP maxhine.

You may also need the 98 set of drivers and the Xp drivers for the printer. There should be an option in the printer properties menu to install the 98 drivers in XP so that 98 can use the 98 drivers when it's trying to print and the Xp box will use the Xp drivers.

Good Luck!
