Network Printer spews mass amounts of paper...

I have a two Canon IR3300 (Image Runner) copier / fax / printers in two office locations.

One of the printers will, for no apparent reason, start spitting out large amounts of paper. The pages have garbage printed at the top that resembles PDF header information.

A total of 10 users print to this station. I've viewed the log and it doesn't give any clues as to why this paper starts spitting out.

Canon reps seem to think one of our computers may be infected with a virus, but I have had no luck in pinning down a specific virus. All computers are running NAV2002, and it doesn't report any found viruses.

Anybody had a similiar problem ?? Know of any specific virus' to explore ??

Any helps is greatly appreciated.

bugbear - check the link for the removal tool. You will probably want to run it on all 10 computers.

Good post Smah.

Also make sure when you are scanning that your antivirus software has been UPDATED to the newest sig files.
You can get them here:

Or use liveupdate if you have access to internet from all systems.

Before you scan, make sure you disconnect all the systems from the network. Kimber

Thanks all for the replies.

We use live-update regularily to update our NAV, and it current. Scanned all systems yesterday, and found no virus. Then I proceeded to run the bugbear fix just to be sure. It also reports no infections.

Twenty minutes after that, the printer started spewing again.

This one has me stumped.

if it is just the one printer then it is the problem printers use memory just like computers to store the info to print. apparantly you got a glich try unplugging the printer for a minute or so to let it reset.. then try it again if it continues then i would say you just have a faulty printer

Kimber, thanks but it wasn't a good post - I forgot to paste the link [nosmiley]

This is what I tried to post:
I suppose a faulty printer is possible - another way to check this theory would be to disconnect the printer from the network. If it still spews - definately the printer. If it doesn't happen, then data is probably being sent through the network.

smah,

I was trying to save you *diplomatically* by sending a link to the site without mentioning the missing pointer to the tool...[blush]
Thanks for pointing yourself out, you really are a good sport. [lol] Kimber

One of the machines is using the wrong printer driver.

This is exactly what you would see happen with a PCL job sent to a Postcript printer, or vice versa.

Have you tried checking the bios settings on each computer? Kimber
