I have a router with an HP Business Inkjet 1000 attached via HP Jetdirect 175x Print Server. The IP Address of the printer is 192.168.1.2.

Also attached is a LinkSys WAP54G at 192.168.1.245.

Several laptops and PCs print both wire-ly and wirelessly using the HP Business Inkjet 1000 without problem, except for one laptop.

This laptop can access the internet and if is entered into the browser, all the details of the printer can be seen. So the link seems good.

A port has been created pointing at 192.168.1.2 and the standard windows driver has been installed. The printer properties correctly indicate things like low ink level, etc.

When printing a test page or from, for example Notepad,, no page appears from the printer. It is in the queue but there is no response from printer, and has to be deleted in order to try again.

I downloaded the printer driver from HP and instaled that, but no success.

I've run the WinXP troubleshooter, but that was no help as everything seems to be in order, and I've rebooted the laptop but without success.

Any further suggestions as the printer is fine with other PC and laptops on the network, both wired and wireless?

Thanks.

Are the computers and printer part of a domain?

Have you tried giving full rights to the the user logged in on the laptop? Not sure that would make much difference, but it seems like a permissions issue of some sort.

No domain, all on the same workgroup.

User has full admin rights. Permissions does seem likely. I'll investigate further.

Another thing to try...

Temporarily change the Business Inkjet to another IP address on the same VLAN (192.168.?.?) as the laptop. Add the printer creating the new TCP/IP port on the laptop and try printing again.

You shouldn't have to do all this, but this would rule out a problem with the IP address and at the same time a problem within Windows regarding the mapped port.

Good idea. I'll give it go over the weekend. Cheers.

I've got it sorted.

I went back to square one, removing the printer and port from the laptop, re-entering the Workgroup name, re-booting, changing the printer's address to adding the printer on LPT1 and re-creating the TCP/IP port.

All is now well. No idea what was wrong.

Thanks for your help.
